Epic


According to Wikipedia, An epic poem is a lengthy narrative poem, ordinarily involving a time beyond living memory in which occurred the extraordinary doings of the extraordinary men and women who, in dealings with the gods or other superhuman forces, gave shape to the mortal universe for their descendants, the poet, and his audience, to understand themselves as a people or nation.

Features of Epic


  • Invocation to the Muse
  • Overmuch heroism. The hero might be nationally important or historically or legendarily significant.
  • The setting is large. It covers many nations or the entire world.
  • Theme of war
  • The action is made of deeds of great valor or requiring superhuman courage.
  • Supernatural forces—gods, angels, demons, monsters—insert themselves in the action.
  • It is written in a very special style.
  • The poet tries to remain objective.
  • Use of epic simile.
