Description his past life to Abbie
In Part 2 Scene 2, Cabot gives an account of his past life to Abbie. He says that he has come here before fifty years ago at the age of twenty. He was the strongest and toughest person of that place. They laughed to see me because this place was very stony and infertile. He says that they did not know about the God. They thought God is easy to get. He replies himself to them that:
“But God is not easy to get. No, not at all easy to get.”
Then he says that once he got a fertile place but the voice of God said to him that:
“This is worth nothing to me. Go back home.”
From the belief in God, he had come back to this stony and infertile place. His coming back was for getting God. Even he gets married to Abbie in response to the voice of God.
Firm faith in God at the end of the play
After knowing the relation between Eben and Abbie, Cabot wants to go to California. But he has lost his money. Eben steals all the money. So, he cannot go to California. He thinks that God does not want him to go to California. He says:
“I can at this moment hear God’s voice warning me to harden myself again and to stay on here on my farm.”
It proves that he has firm faith in God.
Conclusion
To sum up, it can be said that Cabot is an orthodox religious person.
