Nazrul’s contribution to the liberation war of Bangladesh:
Natural and his literary works are both storehouses of Inspiration. His literary works especially “Kandari Hushiar” (Beware My Captain) inspired our freedom fighters during the liberation war against the hostile forces of Pakistan. When Nazrul Islam was born, the Indian subcontinent was also in political turmoil. At that time, Indians were engaged in a long struggle for freedom from British colonial rule. Nazrul witnessed several uprisings like two world wars, the Khilafat movement, Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation movement, and our national movement.
The terrible scenes of all these movements made him a rebel. Just as the ideals of the French Revolution inspired Byron and Shelley, Nazrul was also inspired by these movements. His poetry stands as the mouthpiece of the entire mankind. He wrote poetry not as a source of joy, but as a weapon of liberation and as a weapon against all kinds of oppression. He tries to awaken people’s inner feelings and emotions through his poetry.
Nazrul’s emotional poems and songs along with “Kandari Hushiar” played a remarkable role in the nine-month struggle for Bangladesh’s independence. During the independence war of Bangladesh, Nazrul’s songs were repeatedly sung by “Sadhin Bangla Betar Kendra” which greatly inspired the freedom fighters.
