Phonetics and phonology
- Phonetics is the study of human sounds and phonology is the classification of the sounds within the system of a particular language or languages.
- Phonetical units are called phones, distinct speech sounds or gestures. Phonological units are called phonemes, the small meaningful unit of words.
- In the case of transcription of the words, phonetical symbols are enclosed in square brackets. Elsewhere, phonemic symbols are enclosed in the slash bracket.
