Phonetics and phonology 

  1. Phonetics is the study of human sounds and phonology is the classification of the sounds within the system of a particular language or languages. 
  2. Phonetical units are called phones, distinct speech sounds or gestures. Phonological units are called phonemes, the small meaningful unit of words. 
  3. In the case of transcription of the words, phonetical symbols are enclosed in square brackets. Elsewhere, phonemic symbols are enclosed in the slash bracket.
