Summary
“Wild Nights – Wild Nights!”, is a remarkable poem by American poet Emily Dickinson. It was published in 1891. In this poem, the poet wishes to spend a wild night with her absent lover. Here, the poet is experiencing a kind of sexual desire. If her beloved had been with him then, the night would have been much happier. In expressing this emotion, she compares himself to several things.
At first, she compares herself to a sailor. Just as the sailor looks for a harbor in the midst of stormy seas, the poet imagines herself as a sailor seeking refuge with his loved ones. The sailor once reaches the port, he feels safe from any danger. In the same way, the poet’s beloved is a safe place for her.
The poet then depicts the stormy sea as calm in her imagination. The ocean seems like heaven to her now. She thinks she is going to heaven. And her beloved is her port. She wants to go to the port. This is how the poem ends.
