According to Burke’s description, the northern part of India is a solid mass of land about eight hundred miles in length and four or five hundred miles broader. The southern part becomes narrower but it dilates later; narrower or broader. The eastern and northeastern coasts of the country are stretched to the borders of Pegu. Bengal, Bahar, Orissa, and Benares measure 161,978 square miles which are larger than the whole Kingdom of France. Oude, with its dependent provinces, is 53,286 square miles. The Carnatic, Tanjuor, and Circars are 65,948 square miles which are larger than England. The whole area including Bombay and Salsette measures 281,412 square miles. It forms a territory that is larger than any European dominion, except Russia and Turkey.
