What is the significance of the title Spring and Fall?
In the poem ”Spring and Fall”, Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 – 1889) discusses the short life span of human life and all living beings on earth. Just like the Spring, we are born and we flourish on God’s earth. When the time comes, we fade away like the Fall and embrace death.
Margaret is a young girl as the listener in the poem. The speaker of the poem tries to teach her the natural truth with the reference to falling leaves. Margaret is crying to see the falling leaves. The speaker consoles her and says that we all have to die one day like the leaves. Firstly, these leaves were buds then turned green then turned yellow, and finally die. Like this cycle, men also die. Firstly, they are born then turn young then turn old, and finally die. He means to say that It is the natural system. We can do nothing about it. Hence, the title itself utters the entire poem.
